Message from the Past President: In today's educational climate, NCSM must focus its vision on recognition and inclusion of mathematics leaders at all levels including schools, districts, college/university, state/provincial, and national. We are at a critical time in which we must ensure that all students have access to an excellent mathematics education from pre-kindergarten to beyond college. The best means of reaching this goal is to help teachers at all levels increase their expertise in teaching mathematics. That is the job of mathematics leaders.

When I think back to my time as a middle school teacher, I recall the excitement of learning more mathematics and discovering new ways to share mathematics so that it made sense to my students and later sharing these ideas with other teachers. What enabled me to do this the influence of leaders in the field who helped me to become a better teacher and begin to take on leadership roles.

NCSM serves its members in many ways. Through our conferences, journals, newsletters, publications, website and the leadership academy, NCSM offers the opportunity to learn from and network with other mathematics leaders in North America. The NCSM Board has set an agenda to continue and improve these services for its members. My goal as president will be to help the board to implement these plans and to continue to give NCSM the national presence needed to make our concerns and issues know to other organizations, to governmental agencies, and to mathematics leaders at all levels.
