This year's program features 6 topic strands:
Strand 1. Leadership with the Spirit of Quality Professional Development
Help and support other leaders by sharing your models of professional development that support high quality teaching. Consider questions such as: How do leaders help teachers incorporate high quality teaching into daily practice? How does a leader design and implement effective professional development? How does a leader work effectively with teachers who have a broad range of backgrounds and experiences? How is the role of mathematics leadership changing in professional development? How can leaders support the growth and development of future leaders?
Strand 2. Leadership with the Spirit of Quality Assessments Driving Decision Making
Help and support other leaders by sharing your experiences with assessment strategies, techniques, and tools, and the use of collected data to make decisions for teaching and learning. Consider questions such as: What are the implications of No Child left Behind on classroom assessment and instructional practices? What assessment tools do you use that would benefit others? What strategies have you used to counteract the perceived need to teach to the test? What strategies have you used to promote "assessment for learning"? How do leaders ensure that classroom assessments have a balance of knowledge, skill, comprehension, and application? How have you used data from assessments and other sources to improve teaching and learning?
Strand 3. Leadership with the Spirit of Technological Innovation
Familiarize other leaders with the latest state-of-the-art technology and models that hold promise to improve teaching and learning of mathematics. Consider questions such as: What are examples of educationally sound and appropriate technology uses in mathematics education? How do leaders help teachers keep up to date with technology applications for instruction? What are some examples of technology that streamline or simplify what a teacher does on a daily basis?
Strand 4. Leadership with the Spirit of Equity and Access
Help other leaders become familiar with programs, strategies, and materials that ensure access to quality mathematics for all students. Consider questions such as: What programs or strategies have you used to help ensure your schools provide access and equity for every student? What materials have you found that are effective in dealing with equity and access issues? Have you a model for access and equity that you feel should be shared with other leaders? What strategies have you used for teachers, schools, or districts that have been slow to respond to equity and access issues?
Strand 5. Leadership with the Spirit of Many Cultures
Share with other leaders programs and strategies that have effectively incorporated the mathematics and contributions of other cultures into curriculum and instruction. Consider questions such as: What are some specific examples of curricula that emphasize the contributions of many cultures to the development and application of mathematics? What strategies do you use to help teachers appreciate the multi-cultural nature of mathematics and the importance of its emphasis in their teaching?
Strand 6. Leadership with the Spirit of Outreach
Share with other leaders your experiences with outreach strategies and materials. Consider questions such as: What are some of the messages that we need to share with all our stakeholders? How can we get our message out to all constituencies including colleagues, parents, local organizations, business and industry, government officials, and the media? How do we garner and sustain support from these constituencies? How do we develop advocacy? How do we deal with public perceptions formed by counter groups?
